Showing Youth Directly TOKIO HOTEL
We are heading to the little German town that Bach devoted his life to create some fantastic music pieces, Leipzig. They are Tokio Hotel, who showed their youth directly through their charm of rock and conquered the world in a few years. They came to Taiwan to promote their new album Humanoid on 4th May and at the same time, HitFM had a close interview with Tokio Hotel about the origin of the band name, random stuff happened during the world tour, making of the album and their feelings when writing lyrics. These all could help you understand more about Tokio Hotel!
The interviewer (B): TOKIO HOTEL came to Taiwan to promote themselves, among all the things that you saw in Taiwan, What things have impressed you the most?
TOKIO HOTEL (TH): The fans [The twins said together]! When we got off the plane, there were many fans waiting at the airport. Their loud screams made us really happy. Taipei is a beautiful city that we saw a lot of splendid buildings. Georg has taken many photos and we hope to meet more funny people and stuff in Taiwan.
B: Maybe you have answered this question for a thousand times, but many Taiwan fans still want to know the answer. Why did you name your band Tokio Hotel?
TH: I think everybody who has listened to our songs knows that we were not from Tokyo. In fact we have never been to Tokyo, so we hope we could have a chance to visit this big city. It is like a symbol of us. We chose "TOKIO" because of its pronunciation and its image of a huge city. In addition, when we were on tour we always had to live in hotels, so this is the meaning of "Tokio Hotel".
B: Are there any touching things during your shows? TH: Yes, that was an important moment to us. We were proud to be invited to France and that was a golden chance. There were many touching moments so it is hard to explain. There were fans singing "Durch Den Monsun" outside our hotels in many countries and we were moved. There were too many magical moments such as the first times when we went to Asia and USA and met our fans. Of course I also want to go to Japan to see our fans there as soon as possible because of our band name.
B: About the fans...
TH: There are many energetic fans who followed us on the last tour. We can see them on the first row in every concert and they followed our car after the concerts too. They even camped outside the venue of our concerts. Nevertheless we are happy about all these things because they act like they are living with "Tokio Hotel" so we wouldn't feel lonely. Wherever we go we are surrounded by our fans and can share many moments with them. These are all helpful as they encourage us to go on. We are like one family.
B: The new album is different from your past albums that it has many electric sounds and effects. They make it sounds more shinny and fashionable. How did you feel when you decided to make all these changes?
TH: We usually record our album in the studio and we never plan too much about it. We follow our feelings and opinions and we spend a lot of time in the studio to finish recording it. Apart from the song titles, we also discussed about the name, cover and videos of the album. When I am writing a song, I will think of the scenes, stories and costumes of it. So this album allows us to step forward because it has more images.
Of course for the production part we also need to step forward. We have more ideas like using different ways and instruments to compose songs so that every song can have numbers of different versions. Sometimes a song could have up to 5 versions.
B: As you started your career when you were 16, did this make any changes to your lives and friendships? Some songs in your new album describe about pain and the desire to be understood…(WORLD BEHIND MY WALL, HUMANDID, PAIN OF LOVE). Are those your true stories?
TH: Yes. Actually I wrote those songs because I was upset and had strong emotions and feelings. We collect feelings because we don't know when the inspirations will come. They can come from any places such as movies, cities or people around you. These things might not happened directly to us but the emotions and feelings did appear in our real lives.
B: Some concerts of the American tour had been cancelled because of the singer suffering from the vocal cord disease. Can you talk about this experience and how do you take good care of your voice now?
TH: This is hard to say because I seldom went out to play during the tour. I didn't drink beer too. During the tour, I took exclusive good care to myself like I drank tea everyday. This is very important to me because you never know if you would be safe or not. Everything could happen and was not predictable. I just hope these bad things won't happen again. After that the concerts were all successful and I hope to come to Taiwan again!

I still remembered that when the writer were invited to Hsuan Chuang University to give a speech about music in 2005, he said that "inspirations have to be accumulated...". We always want the inspirations to come to us in a sudden and then we can create some amazing stuff naturally. We just need to spend 5 mins to feel the miracle and we should dance. Until now I still think that this is an excuse for myself to be lazy.
The talented photographer Nobuyoshi Araki form Japan once said that "If your keep your failure you might create some masterpieces."
