Scan : Seventeen (Singapore) - Interview with Tokio Hotel - July-Issue

imagebam.com

We sneaked a few minutes with twin brothers Bill and Tom from the German pop-rock band. They were recently in town for the Audi Fashion Festival.
You guys walked the runway for Dsquared2. Any interest in becoming fashion designers at some point?
Bill: This has always been a dream for us, and now that we are musicians, we have so many chances to work with fantastic photographers and designers. It would be a dream to design my own things. For the last tour I designed some of my own costumes too.
Besides your hairstyles, how can we tell you and Tom apart?
Bill: Tom is the serious one. He handles the business side of things. But, we're like, one person. For the first six years of our life we looked the same because our parents gave us identical sweatshirts! After that we decided we wanted to look different from each other.
How have you dealt with the success of Tokio Hotel? Has it been really crazy?
Bill: For the first few years it was really strange. We could no longer walk on the streets of Europe alone, or hang out with our friends and family the same way. We've also given up a lot of things, but the sacrifice has been worth it, because we really want to be musicians.
How long does it takes for you to get ready in the morning?

Bill: (Laughs) You know, with the hair...Tom: Ten hours!Bill: I practice a lot because I do this every day, so now I take about 15 minutes. You need to have a messy hair to get a style this high - so I don't brush my hair often and I use lots of hairspray.
What do you think of Singapore?
Bill: We are impressed. It's our first time here, and nobody told us how beautiful Singapore was! You have a jungle here and nice weather - Germany is just so cold! we are planning to bring the whole concert production here and do a tour, hopefully! It'll be cool to do a whole tour in Asia, and show you our Humanoid City and outfits.

Exclusive Interview with Tokio Hotel

Just like meeting good friends!
Kawanku was so lucky to listen to these 4 German boys spill out their feelings. From their school stories, favorite food to their love life
.
Kawanku: Hi guys! How are you? Tell us about you latest album's tour promo!
Bill: We feel great! We just finish our European tour. So, we've been on the road for three months and we had a lot of great concerts in Europe. We've always wanted to go to Asia and were so excited to see our Asian fans for the first time. It's really fun!

Kawanku: Before Malaysia, where did you guys have a concert?
Tom: We just performed an acoustic set in Singapore and we saw our fans there for the first time. That's really good. Even though we were only there for three days, we were really happy.

Kawanku: Is there a difference between you European and Asian fans?
Bill: We've performed in Europe and have performed in many European countries. Every time we meet new fans from any country for the first time, we're so happy, but there isn't a difference. Especially when we see them laughing and crying. It's a magic moment.

Kawanku: You guys have lots of Indonesia
n fans, you know!

Tom: Really? Wow, great.
Bill: Yeah, it's really cool! When we go places far from home and have fans singing along with us there know all about us, it shocks us. We're really happy to hear it.

Kawanku: You get lots of tweets from you fans in Indonesia?
Bill: We heard about that, we've got a lot of support from the internet. But we had no idea we have so many fans there. It's really great.

Kawanku: Have you ever heard of Indonesia?
Tom: Of course! But we don't really know much about it. It's our first time in Asia. Umm.. You know, it's a big surprise for us.

Kawanku: Who doesn't have a girlfriend yet?
Bill: We're all single, except for Georg.

Kawanku: What kind of girls do you like?

Bill: I haven't had a girlfriend for five years, because I haven't found my soulmate yet. I don't have a specific type of girl, but I can see it at first sight. I believe in that, so I'm still waiting.
Gustav: I agree with Bill, I don't have a specific type of girl. As long as it works out when I meet her.
Georg: There are so many beautiful girls in this world.
Tom: Georg is right! It's really hard to say for me. We see beautiful girls everywhere, like in Singapore and at the airport when we just got to Malaysia. Beautiful girls are everywhere in the world, so it's hard to say. I don't care whether the girls is blond or brunette, as long as when I meet her, I can really feel the love. It's not physical, it's all about love. I can feel it.

Kawanku: Do you have any interesting stories to tell from your school days?
Bill: We had a really bad time in school. Since we grew up in a small village, we felt like aliens on a foreign planet. We always thought about music, unlike the other kids. I had a lot of troubles with the teachers and other school members. We were really bad in school! Ha ha ha.

Kawanku: How was the process of making you second English album, Humanoid?
Bill: For almost a year we were in our studio working on this album. We didn't get any pressure from the record company or anyone else. So we had time to relax, and create our new sound. We tried lots of new things while making this album. For our previous albums, we did them in one studio in Germany, but this time, we did it in different studios in Germany and America, like in Los Angeles and Miami, so we got inspiration from lots of countries. I think Humanoid sounds a lot more electronic than our previous album.
Tom: It's like adding new sound to the old sound
Bill: It was a big challenge for us to make this album different than our other ones.
Tom: My biggest challenge was teaching Georg how to play the bass hahaha.

Kawanku: Ha ha ha! Tom, why do you always make fun of Georg?
Georg: That's a good question.
Tom: I don't know why. Georg's a funny guy.

Kawanku: Have you guys tried any Asian food? What do you like?
Tom: Of course we have! I like noodles and vegetarian sushi.
Georg: I like fried rice.
Tom: Oh, yeah, me too.

Kawanku: So, when will you come to Indonesia? For a holiday maybe?
Tom: That sounds good, yeah, we'll see. Last year we went to the Maldives, a good place for vacation.
Bill: We really want to go all around Asia. That would be cool. We want to have all the people who help us with the concerts in Europe to plan some concerts in Asia.

Kawanku: We have some letters and presents from your fans in Indonesia!
Bill: What's that? Oh, letters and dolls that look like us!
Georg: Wow, that's great.
Gustav: Yeah, great!

Kawanku: Well, we're out of time now, is there anything you'd like to say to your Indonesian fans?
Bill: We wanna say thank you for your support so far, and we hope you can come with the show. We definitely wanna see all of our fans an play live for them. Thank you very much!

Tokio Hotel
Causing hysteria, cries and shock

The enthusiasm of hundreds of Tokio Hotel fans just never ends. Since the day was bright, till night time, they never stopped their screams and cries. Especially when they actually met them, they got even crazier!

Waiting in line from morning:
Since 9 AM, Tokio Hotel fans were already hanging out in 1 Utama Shopping Center, Kuala Lumpur, where the signing session was held on May 1st. The signing session didn't even start until 11.30. "We came early so we could be the first ones to get their signatures" say Joyce and Panda from Hong Kong. To be able to join the signing session was easy. All we had to do was have a Humanoid CD and bring it along with us.

At exactly 11.30, these four German boys appeared on the small stage, where they would sign hundreds of their fans' CDs, accompanied by their screams. For the whole session, Bill and the boys had a smile on their faces and even answered some of their fans' questions. Their friendliness must have shocked their fans. Some were shouting hysterically, crying uncontrollably and calling people to tell them what happened.

One hour later, the signing session was over. After waving good-bye to their fans, they went back to the hotel through the emergency exit. Kawanku and other fans fought to chase Bill, Tom, Gustav and Georg until the security and bodyguards were so overwhelmed. Sadly we couldn't chase the,, but luckily, Kawanku and some other lucky fans still had the chance to meet Tokio Hotel during a meet and greet after the showcase.

Meet & Greet
Happy but sad

After the showcase was over, at about 11.30 PM, Kawanku and Jade, the winner of our Tokio Hotel quiz and over 50 other meet and greet winners gathered at the Universal music booth to meet Tokio Hotel and get a photo with them backstage. All of the winners seemed happy yet intense at the same time. For almost an hour, Kawanku and Jade waited for teir turn to get a photo. Tired, sweaty, hungry, those feelings were all mixed up. But as we were called to see Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav, it all went away. Unfortunately, the security was pretty tight. We only had three minutes to take a photo, and we weren't allowed to bring our own cameras. That wasn't a problem since they had a professional photographer ready to take our pictures. We felt so happy, yet sad at the same time to be parting with Tokio Hotel. Till we meet again, we're waiting for you in Indonesia!

The Winner of the Tokio Hotel quiz
Non-stop shock!

Sweating, a queasy stomach and a racing heart was what Jade felt when she met her four idols.

Jade Alicia Poa

"I was buying ice cream, and I suddenly got the call saying I won the Tokio hotel quiz. I sat down and cancelled my order. I was so shocked. After I hung up, I felt like screaming, but I held it in. When I got home, I screamed in my room and jumped on my bed. Luckily, I had permission from my parent before sending in my Tokio hotel artwork, so I was allowed to go to Kuala Lumpur.

It was so intense meeting Tokio Hotel for the first time, wen Kawanku had an interview with them. I kept thinking it was a dream, I was so shocked! I couldn't even say anything, even though there were so many things I wanted to ask them. I was so nervous that Bill and Tom laughed at me, ha ha ha! From the beginning till the end of the interview, I paid close attention to everything they did and every part of their body.

I came with Kawanku to all the Tokio Hotel events. From the interview, press conference, signing session, showcase, to the very last event, which was the meet and greet that made me cry. I was so sad to part with them and not see them again. I couldn't sleep that night, thinking about all the moments when I met Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav. I can't even explain the feeling. Thanks, Kawanku, for making my dreams come true."

Interviews : Galaxie Magazine (Malaysia) - 01. - 15.06.2010

imagebam.com imagebam.com

A big thank you goes out to all Tokio Hotel fans and Galaxie readers who contributed to these questions.
If I weren't a fan before meeting Tokio Hotel, I certainly am one now. There is absolutely everything to like them. Their music is out of this world, they are larger than life showmen onstage and in person, they are the coolest, funniest guys you could have the pleasure of hanging out with. The best perk though about being a Tokio Hotel fan is the guys absolutely treasure you.

During Galaxie's 15-minute interview with Tokio Hotel on their visit here in Malaysia, it was impossible to get a straight answer from Bill and Tom Kaulitz, Georg Listing or Gustav Schäfer.

However, when it comes to matters of their fans, the guys are dead serious.

Which is why, Tokio Hotel were absolutely thrilled to answer your questions received via Twitter and Facebook. Be advised though that it was hard to keep a straight face at some of their answers.

Since quite a number of questions on our list concerned Bill's hair, we decided to go with that first.

Bill, can you explain why there is a worldwide obsession with your hair?
Bill: I don't know. I just like to experiment and try new things out with my hair. Before this, I had dreadlocks.

Bill, have you tried to convince the rest of the guys to do hair makeovers?
Bill: I hope they would, but ...
Tom, Georg, Gustav: No! Never, ever.

Tokio Hotel, since you guys are clearly "living the dream" are there any dreams that you haven't fulfilled?
Bill: One of our dreams as a band that we really wish for is to go to Tokyo. We've never been there yet. A Grammy award would also be nice.

Tom, what's the reason you won't have a tattoo?
Tom: I don't know. I've thought about it.
Bill: He's afraid. He's scared to get a tattoo.

Bill, if you had your own fashion collection what kind of clothes would it include?
Bill: I can't decide if it will be the stuff I wear or something completely different. But I do know that I really want to do something in the future that involves a collection because I love to design and be creative when it comes to fashion.

Is Georg still messing up his chords?
Tom: (joking) He can't play good bass.
Georg: That is not true.
Tom: I don't know why because I taught Gustav the drums and he plays really well but I can't seem to teach George. He is not talented. I think that is the main problem.
Georg: That's not true, that's not true.

Tokio Hotel, what are you going to do with all your stage costumes and The Dogs Unleashed motorbike once the tour wraps?
Bill: That's going to be intersting when the time comes beause my closets at home are already full. I have no place to put them! The motorbike, we thought of putting in the garden
.
Bill, have you ever gone public without your makeup?

Bill: When i'm on vacation or travelling I don't usually have makeup on and that's not really a problem for me. But then again, I also feel more like myslef when I do.

Bill and Tom, you've mentioned being "more than twins." What does that mean?
Tom: We are identical twins and the connection between us is very strong. We are like soulmates as well. I know what he is thinking the second he thinks it.
Bill: I guess you could say we are almost like one person.

Georg and Gustav, what is it like working with Tom and Bill?

Bill: I think it is an honour for them to be working with us.
Georg: Sometimes it is a little bit annoying because the talk the whole day. But, we have been a band for 10 years and we feel more like brothers.

Tokio Hotel, what do you think of Asian girls?
Tom: Really good! We were in Singapore and we saw some fans, and a lot of them are very beautiful girls. And it's the same when we arrived in Malaysia. All good, really good.
Georg: Tom is really happy.

Interviews : HitFM HitoRadio - Interview in Taiwan - 01.06.2010

Showing Youth Directly TOKIO HOTEL

We are heading to the little German town that Bach devoted his life to create some fantastic music pieces, Leipzig. They are Tokio Hotel, who showed their youth directly through their charm of rock and conquered the world in a few years. They came to Taiwan to promote their new album Humanoid on 4th May and at the same time, HitFM had a close interview with Tokio Hotel about the origin of the band name, random stuff happened during the world tour, making of the album and their feelings when writing lyrics. These all could help you understand more about Tokio Hotel!

The interviewer (B): TOKIO HOTEL came to Taiwan to promote themselves, among all the things that you saw in Taiwan, What things have impressed you the most?
TOKIO HOTEL (TH): The fans [The twins said together]! When we got off the plane, there were many fans waiting at the airport. Their loud screams made us really happy. Taipei is a beautiful city that we saw a lot of splendid buildings. Georg has taken many photos and we hope to meet more funny people and stuff in Taiwan.

B: Maybe you have answered this question for a thousand times, but many Taiwan fans still want to know the answer. Why did you name your band Tokio Hotel?
TH: I think everybody who has listened to our songs knows that we were not from Tokyo. In fact we have never been to Tokyo, so we hope we could have a chance to visit this big city. It is like a symbol of us. We chose "TOKIO" because of its pronunciation and its image of a huge city. In addition, when we were on tour we always had to live in hotels, so this is the meaning of "Tokio Hotel".

B: Are there any touching things during your shows? Such as 500 thousand fans singing your German songs under the Eiffel Tower...
TH: Yes, that was an important moment to us. We were proud to be invited to France and that was a golden chance. There were many touching moments so it is hard to explain. There were fans singing "Durch Den Monsun" outside our hotels in many countries and we were moved. There were too many magical moments such as the first times when we went to Asia and USA and met our fans. Of course I also want to go to Japan to see our fans there as soon as possible because of our band name.

B: About the fans...
TH: There are many energetic fans who followed us on the last tour. We can see them on the first row in every concert and they followed our car after the concerts too. They even camped outside the venue of our concerts. Nevertheless we are happy about all these things because they act like they are living with "Tokio Hotel" so we wouldn't feel lonely. Wherever we go we are surrounded by our fans and can share many moments with them. These are all helpful as they encourage us to go on. We are like one family.

B: The new album is different from your past albums that it has many electric sounds and effects. They make it sounds more shinny and fashionable. How did you feel when you decided to make all these changes?
TH: We usually record our album in the studio and we never plan too much about it. We follow our feelings and opinions and we spend a lot of time in the studio to finish recording it. Apart from the song titles, we also discussed about the name, cover and videos of the album. When I am writing a song, I will think of the scenes, stories and costumes of it. So this album allows us to step forward because it has more images.
Of course for the production part we also need to step forward. We have more ideas like using different ways and instruments to compose songs so that every song can have numbers of different versions. Sometimes a song could have up to 5 versions.

B: As you started your career when you were 16, did this make any changes to your lives and friendships? Some songs in your new album describe about pain and the desire to be understood…(WORLD BEHIND MY WALL, HUMANDID, PAIN OF LOVE). Are those your true stories?
TH: Yes. Actually I wrote those songs because I was upset and had strong emotions and feelings. We collect feelings because we don't know when the inspirations will come. They can come from any places such as movies, cities or people around you. These things might not happened directly to us but the emotions and feelings did appear in our real lives.

B: Some concerts of the American tour had been cancelled because of the singer suffering from the vocal cord disease. Can you talk about this experience and how do you take good care of your voice now?
TH: This is hard to say because I seldom went out to play during the tour. I didn't drink beer too. During the tour, I took exclusive good care to myself like I drank tea everyday. This is very important to me because you never know if you would be safe or not. Everything could happen and was not predictable. I just hope these bad things won't happen again. After that the concerts were all successful and I hope to come to Taiwan again!

Postscript
I still remembered that when the writer were invited to Hsuan Chuang University to give a speech about music in 2005, he said that "inspirations have to be accumulated...". We always want the inspirations to come to us in a sudden and then we can create some amazing stuff naturally. We just need to spend 5 mins to feel the miracle and we should dance. Until now I still think that this is an excuse for myself to be lazy.
The talented photographer Nobuyoshi Araki form Japan once said that "If your keep your failure you might create some masterpieces."

Stage fright?

Bill: Well, we have stage fright of our own concerts.. I've always thought that we're the most nervous band. I couldn't imagine that there are other people who are that nervous as well.

Tom: But if you just take a look at the backstage area here, then…

Bill: …then you know that we're not the only ones [who are nervous]
Question (you can't see the question, but it's about rituals before a show)

Tom: Well, we actually never had a real ritual. The only thing is that Georg takes a dump before every show. Georg always says "I have to make "Kacko", and that's still the ritual which brings us luck as well.
Red Carpet

Vasta: We were all waiting for that moment – Tokio Hotel! … This is nuts! … Tokio Hotel! Oh my God! Here we go! It's getting loud… May I interpose myself between you pretty quick, before you go to your fans. Last year it sounded exactly like that, where were you?!

Bill: Yeah well, last year we didn't manage to come, unfortunately. We're happy to be finally here again. Uhm.. for us the Comet Award Show is always a big thing and we're happy that we managed to come this year.

Vasta: And how does it feel? I mean, you travelled around the world, does it leave you cold or is it still nervousness and beating of the heart to come to the Comet Awards?

Tom: Uhm… we're not that nervous anymore but it's still wonderful, definitely.

Bill: Yeah, definitely. I'm happy, we also just had a great concert [in Oberhausen] because we were on tour, and Oberhausen is always good.

Vasta: Who are you looking forward to today?

Tom: Uhm.. uhm.. uhm.. uhm..

Bill: .. to our nomination.

Tom: Yeah, exactly.

Vasta: Do you think that you'll get the award?

Tom: I hope so, I hope so.

Bill: Well, I know that our fans are very strong when it comes to votings, and I hope that this time they made it again. We'll see, but we definitely have hard competition. I think Rammstein are nominated, too. Won't be so easy.

Vasta: Okay, well, I wish you all the best, you'll get that thing! And we'll see us later and now go to your fans, it’s almost unbearable [the noise]!
Do's & Don'ts

Tom: Many people just want to come to us and have sex with us. So, you can clearly notice that.

Bill: This is like coming home, we just had a great concert here in Oberhausen, and.. uhm.. I have to say it always feels good to be here. Absolutely. Precisely because we live here, this is our home country, and that’s really cool.

Interviewer: Unblushingly said, by now you're already the granddads in the pop scene or also here at the Comet Awards. Justin Bieber moves up with the age of 16, who rocks the fans here as well, what do you think about him?

Bill: I haven't heard much about it so far, to be honest. Well, I just heard about him here at the Comet Awards. But yeah.. it's good if such a young person has success, I think it's good.

Interviewer: Is there a rivalry?

Tom: Uhm.. nah.. well, actually there's not much to say about it, I haven't faced up that much with it, so far.

Interviewer: But is there a rivalry between the teen-stars right now?

Bill: Well, I don't think so.. We aren't concerned with it so much.. I think we always make just our thing, and as you just said, we're already a bit the old-timers. We've been game since already five years, I think we were well received and we feel absolutely well.

Interviewer: Tom, I gotta address something – Viagra, what was going on? Please enlighten us!

Tom: Uhm.. I don't know that, you gotta ask a proper question, I don't know what to say about that..

Interviewer: You bought Viagra..?

Tom: I bought Viagra, yes.

Interviewer: And did you consume it?

Tom: I consumed it as well, yes.

Interviewer: You tried it?

Tom: But the difference is, the people always talk about it [Viagra] so bad, because it always sound like an accident. But you don't want an accident to happen once more, but I actually can't exclude it [to take Viagra again], to be honest.

Interviewer: How long did it [erection] last?

Tom: Uhm.. I can't tell that exactly, but it definitely lasted very long. But that's also good, now and then..
